I seldom express my political viewpoints, opting to absorb diverse perspectives attentively, sometimes finding amusement in the absurdity of specific ideas. My political involvement remained minimal throughout my upbringing, even upon reaching voting age. When compelled to participate in the voting process, I swiftly scanned the ballot, marking every candidate affiliated with the “Republican” label without conducting thorough research. My sole criterion was their supposed alignment with my political inclinations. It became evident later that merely bearing the Republican label did not necessarily indicate adherence to conservative principles.

In today’s political arena, a candidate’s capacity to govern often takes a back seat to their ability to capture attention. Traditionally, one would entrust medical care to an orthopedic surgeon who other medical professionals recommend. However, voters now seem to disregard the endorsements of those they elect. Despite Trump’s lack of political experience, he managed to captivate the American public with his campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” During the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton’s assertion that America was already prosperous may have alienated her from the electorate. Trump, despite his reputation for habitual lying and name-calling, effectively portrayed Clinton as “Crooked Hillary,” eroding her credibility.
Growing up in a conservative evangelical environment undoubtedly shaped my worldview and voting preferences. Family dinners often turned into discussions about the importance of educational freedom, the rights of the unborn, religious freedom, and opposition to same-sex marriage. My political engagement largely mirrored my family’s beliefs until I began exploring the electoral process and the core values of different political parties. What mattered most was whether politicians’ actions aligned with their rhetoric, a principle my parents instilled in me.
Democrats and Republicans acknowledge the significance of appealing to religious voters for electoral success. Democrats strive to address religious concerns without alienating secular voters, while Republicans aim to maintain and expand their evangelical base. Given evangelical Christians’ staunch adherence to traditional biblical principles, Republican candidates often adopt numerous evangelical positions. The most fervent supporters of Trump within the evangelical community refrain from criticizing him, justifying their continued support as essential for advancing evangelical priorities. Despite Trump’s actions conflicting with Christian values, they remain steadfast in their backing.
The 2016 election ultimately boiled down to selecting the lesser of two evils. While Trump’s deficiencies appeared tolerable then, the hostility and erratic behavior witnessed before his victory persisted throughout his presidency. Character reflects one’s moral and ethical values, and Trump exhibited numerous character flaws. His insecurities manifested in relentless attacks on those who questioned his authority, resembling the behavior of a petulant child.
In the final months of Trump’s presidency, the nation grappled with a deadly pandemic, civil unrest, and calls for racial justice. However, Trump’s lack of empathy and self-reflection became increasingly evident in his response. Evaluating a politician’s performance necessitates considering personal principles, with commendation and critique essential for an accurate assessment. All politicians fall short, and public figures should be held accountable for their actions. Blind allegiance to politicians raises questions about where one draws the line on morals and ethics.
Despite my upbringing, I now identify as socially liberal but fiscally conservative. My perspectives on issues such as same-sex marriage, abortion, and gun control have evolved significantly. Protecting the unborn is as crucial to me as supporting newborns, and I advocate for diverse healthcare options and women’s bodily autonomy. This evolution was not easy, as it often led to challenging conversations with family and friends who still held the views I grew up with.
Many evangelical Christians believed that Trump would best represent their interests and values compared to the Democratic alternative, contributing to his unexpected victory in 2016. While acknowledging some positive changes during his tenure, Trump’s pathological narcissism and erratic behavior remain concerning. It prompts the question of why evangelicals would continue to support someone who embodies the Seven Deadly Sins.
Humans are complex beings prone to inconsistency and hypocrisy. However, we should strive to uphold our convictions and act with moral clarity. Supporting Trump reveals more about a person’s character than their politics. My experiences within religious communities have exposed the hypocrisy that often lies beneath the surface.
Looking ahead, I hope that evangelical Christians will reject Trump in the upcoming election. Some continue to defend him despite his unsuitable characteristics: married three times, involved in numerous extramarital affairs, and known for his vulgar speech. His repertoire of remarks includes references to grabbing women by their genitals, disparaging remarks about immigrants, and a stated reluctance to seek forgiveness from God. There comes a time when character becomes paramount, and Trump has unequivocally fallen short of it. We must remember our biblical beliefs and reject individuals prioritizing political aspirations over moral integrity.
